Lake Isabella is approximately 40 miles northeast of Bakersfield on Highway 178. The area consists of twelve villages surrounding the lake and the Kern River Valley. The major industries are tourism and retirement.

Kern Valley Plaza is the major shopping center that serves the greater Lake Isabella area. It would be highly unlikely that another major anchored center would be developed in the foreseeable future.Vons completed an expansion and remodel in 2003.
